The Felanitx district covers about a third of the total wine-growing area of Pla i Llevant and is located between the Mediterranean Sea and the southeast of the Sierra de Tramuntana . Pla i Llevant is a region of diverse landscapes (plains, hills,mountains) characterized by a very warm climate (up to 40C in thesummer). Wines from the Pla i Llevant region are very popular and account for almost half of all sales from the island of Majorca. The wine estates are relatively large and modern, so therefore, they can cater for small bodegas to larger supermarket chains and as a result, wines from Pla i Llevant can combine quality with competitive prices in an ever expanding market, in contrast to some of the more northerly regions of Majorca. In the south of Pla i Llevant they make some exceptional white wines, but the region has also earned much praise for its red wines with a generously fruity character, smooth texture and full body. Pla i Llevant, with its clay and limestone soils, offers some of the most exciting wines in Europe, in perfect counterpoint with its port-influenced cousins further north, Vi de la Serra de Tramuntana-North Coast. With a climate that enjoys the best of Mediterranean and partially continental influences, the Callet varietal thrives and transforms in to wines great character and individuality in a market with strond allegiances to traditional grape varieties. Add to this the investment and know-how of the wine producers such as Miguel Gelabert and its result is really fascinating.

The main autochthonous red varieties are Callet, Manto Negro, Gorgollasa and Fogoneu; However, in recent years traditional varieties such as Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon are gaining in popularity, often in blends with local varieties. The White wines are light, simple and subtly fruity made with Prensal Blanc, Moll or Giro Ros among the many native varieties. The Pla i Llevant region is divided into 4 different sub-regions. North, South, East and west in Felanitx. The southern part of Pla i Llevant, in the east of island, covers three very different areas. Sa Marineta, the southern sector of the Sierra de Levante and the Pla area has an average elevation of 150 meters, the highest elevation is in the area of Puig de San Salvador of 520 meters and the southern foothills of the Sierra de Levante with an average height of 350 meters.
There is a marked difference between the north and south of Pla i LLevant since the wind called “Embat” that comes from the southern sea, the flattest part of the island, brings different qualities to the vines, providing humidity, freshness (To combat the high temperatures in summer), salinity and on occasion fog due to rainfall.

The Pla i Llevant region has made impressive progress, having won international awards for its
wines. The profile and characteristics of these wines are both a reflection of tradtional european wine making and indigenous agricultural development.
