Serra de Tramuntana IGP has been the pre-eminent fine wine province of Majorca since the times of the Kingdom of Aragon, a reputation reinforced during Archduke Luis Salvadors time spent on the Island, based between Valdemossa and Deia. He prepelled not just the islands popularity (Its culture, its produce and its natural beauty), but his own fame increased too as this noble man secured his place in history as the driver of Majorcan tourism.

The Serra de Tramuntana is a mountainous region on the edge of the sea that occupies the north of the island of Majorca and whose coastline is popularly known as Costa Nord. Its particularity is the contrast between the mountains of more than 1,000 m and the valleys located between them. In the Serra de Tramuntana, the almost impassable escarpments dominate over the sea and gentler slopes to the south. The orography of the area conditions the cultivation of the vineyard, being the common practice, the plantations in terraces.
The terroir used for viticulture is mainly of calcareous origin with very high levels of carbonates (56.2% on average). They are soils with a loam-clay-silt texture, with a good capacity for water retention and no drainage problems.

The Serra de Tramuntana has a sub-humid/humid mesomediterranean bioclimate, and humid supra-Mediterranean in some places. Therefore, it is a Mediterranean climate in all senses, with temperate average temperatures and a seasonal rainfall regime, coinciding the dry season with the warm in summer. Average annual rainfall is 1,500 mm in the higher parts of the sierra. Most of the rain is concentrated in to just a few days, with heavy or very heavy rainfall in autumn and little intensity the rest of the year. This contributes to the fact that in some sections there is a permanent circulation, but with very little travel due to the great filtering capacity of the ground.
The average annual temperature is 16.6 ºC, with a minimum average temperature of 10.8ºC and a maximum of 21.3ºC.

The location of VT Sierra de Tramuntana Costa-Nord encompasses, starting from the northwest, crossing the entire island to Alcudia. VT Serra de Tramuntana – Costa Nord is culturally and climatically influenced by the mountains and the surrounding towns are Alaró, Alcúdia, Andratx, Banyalbufar, Bunyola, Calvià, Campanet, Deià, Escorca, Estellencs, Esporles, Fornalutx, Mancor de la Vall , Pollença, Puigpunyent, Selva, Sóller and Valldemossa.

The most important fine wine regions of VT Serra de Tramuntana – Cost Nord area are: Pollença in the north where they grow Malvasía, Moscatel, Giro Ros; Esporles, which incorporates Manto Negro and Viognier; Banyalbufar with Malvasia and Chardonnay. These strains are the queens, including the Viognier strain, in VT Serra de Tramuntana – Costa Nord. Strains such as Muscatel, planted only in the most favorable places, are the insignias when producing fine wines such as Dolç de Gel from Bodega Mortix and Cornet de Malvasia from Bodega Sa Vinya. On the other hand, the Viognier from vineyards south of VT Sierra de Tramuntana are also the most popular in adaptation and production of quality wines, for example the Bodega Son Vich de Superna with notable single varietals in steel tanks and aging in oak barrels giving it elegance. to his wine.

They are followed closely by the Blanc de Noirs wines (white wines made from red grapes) made mostly with the native Manto Negro vine, here the Son Vich de Superna winery with its wine “Marges” and the other wine called Malva, a “natural wine” made with the Malvasia vine from the Selva Vins Winery.

For red wines the native Manto Negro variety is king, responsible for copious amounts of wines. However, a much more rewarding red would be a blend with Syrah or Cabernet Sauvignon.

It should be noted that in the VT Sierra de Tramuntana – Costa Nord notable blends are made with Bordeaux and Rhône vines, obviously without forgetting the native vines. A notorious example is the Ribas Winery with its Ribas wine where it combines Manto Negro (50%) with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah where this last red grape has the best adaptation and popularity in the region.
